When his daughter Penny suddenly appears on a visit from her school, he is forced to put more effort into caring for her than he is used to. Fortunately, Penny is able to rely also on the companionship of Lady Bess, an old family friend. While Lord Randolph is disturbed at how beautiful and charming Bess has become since their childhood days, Penny thinks she would be an excellent stepmother.
